Sakura & Clay
Timeless Beauty in Form
About Us
The Full Story of Sakura & Clay
"Sakura & Clay" was born from a desire to blend Japan's rich cultural heritage with the refined sensibilities of modern aesthetics. Rooted in a deep respect for ancient craftsmanship and the timeless beauty of nature, our journey began with a partnership between passionate founders and a renowned pottery gallery owner in Japan. Together, we envisioned a way to bring the artistry of Japanese pottery to a global audience, celebrating the stories, traditions, and dedication of master artisans. Our mission goes beyond offering exquisite creations; we aim to preserve the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship, connecting past and present through each piece that brings joy, serenity, and lasting value into everyday life.
Our Founding Vision
"Timeless beauty brings a richer life. Genuine craftsmanship warms the heart"
At Sakura & Clay, we hold a deep reverence not only for the eternal charm of “Sakura”—which symbolizes renewal, elegance, and the fleeting yet precious nature of beauty—but also for the cultural heritage represented by “Clay.” The history of Japanese pottery dates back to the Jomon period (14,000–300 BCE), one of the oldest pottery traditions in the world. The artisans of the Jomon era crafted intricate pottery that reflected a profound connection to nature and spirituality.

"Clay" embodies this respect for ancient artistry and the natural world. Jomon pottery was more than just a functional object; it served as a medium for expression, ritual, and connection among people. Its presence, which evokes the eternal bond between nature and humanity, is deeply woven into our creative process.
Sakura & Clay is a place where the ancient craftsmanship of Japan meets the refined pottery of today, blending heritage with modern beauty. Just as the cherry blossoms signal new beginnings, the clay carries within it stories and history, reflecting the power of nature and cultural depth in every piece we offer. True richness lies not in the accumulation of possessions but in surrounding oneself with things that resonate with the heart, bringing beauty, joy, and serenity to daily life. Sakura & Clay offers encounters with such authentic values, allowing each of our customers to experience the beauty, tradition, and genuine charm of Japan.
Our Driving Mission
In the early summer of 2024, the founders of Sakura & Clay joined forces with the owner of a renowned pottery gallery in Japan to launch a project aimed at sharing high-quality Japanese pottery—blending tradition with modern aesthetics—with the U.S. and beyond. Inspired by the cultural significance of "Sakura" representing renewal and grace, and “Clay” embodying the essence of nature and spirituality, they are committed to sharing the beauty and craftsmanship of Japan with the world.

We believe that the unique power of Japan’s traditional crafts can enrich lives and inspire awe. Sakura & Clay is more than just a retailer—we are passionate admirers of the works of the artisans with whom we collaborate, eagerly anticipating the next encounter with their creations.

Across Japan, there are remarkable artisans who continue to preserve traditional techniques, but their numbers are dwindling, and some regions face challenges in passing down their heritage due to a lack of successors. While some areas have made progress in nurturing the next generation, others are at risk of losing precious skills and cultural assets. We are dedicated to working with local artisans' associations, industry groups, and the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry to ensure that these invaluable traditions continue to thrive.

Choosing Sakura & Clay means joining a mission to preserve Japan’s rich craftsmanship and pass it on to future generations. Each piece chosen by our customers and investors supports the future of traditional crafts, nurtures the passion of the artisans, and brings timeless beauty into everyday life.
Our Commitment
"Genuine Stories, Heartfelt Connections"
Every item curated by Sakura & Clay is crafted by skilled artisans across Japan. Bringing truly authentic pieces to life requires the collective effort of those who create the tools, prepare the raw materials, and shape the final products. These stories of connection form the essence of the pieces we introduce.

Beyond offering beautiful designs, we value the stories and deep understanding of the artisans behind their creations. By sharing their journeys and traditions, we hope our customers will see these pieces not just as functional items but as treasured objects whose value deepens over time.

We believe that true understanding begins with knowing the stories behind each piece. Therefore, we use primary sources and thorough research to ensure accuracy. This allows us to provide not only enjoyable reads but also valuable records for future generations.
Ethical and Sustainable Standards
"Preserving True Heritage"
At Sakura & Clay, we guarantee that every product is made in Japan, upholding the dignity of traditional craftsmanship. As the popularity of Japanese traditional crafts rises, the issue of imitations has become a concern. We take this challenge seriously, ensuring complete traceability for all our products.
We carefully investigate raw materials and production processes, offering only products in which we have complete trust. Additionally, we set fair prices to ensure that artisans and workshops can continue their craft sustainably.
Our mission is to propose a rich and fulfilling lifestyle to our customers while fostering a sustainable future for Japanese traditional crafts. Through Sakura & Clay, we hope you will embark on a special journey where beauty, heritage, and heartfelt craftsmanship come together.
